William James Brown, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on April 17, 2025, in Burlington, Vermont, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on August 4, 1942, in Burlington, and from that moment on, he brought joy and kindness to everyone he encountered.
William’s life was marked by dedication and service. He proudly served for 33 years in the Army National Guard, a period during which he demonstrated unwavering commitment and a strong sense of duty to his country. In addition to his military career he was employed with Robert's Aluminum installing aluminum siding, and as a machine operator, he had a significant role in helping to manufacture Gatling guns for planes. Beyond this, he contributed to the wire and cable industry by operating braiders for Belden Wire and Cable.
William was a proud alumnus of Burlington High School, graduating with the Class of 1961. He carried the lessons learned there throughout his life, reflecting values of hard work and integrity. Family was at the heart of everything William did. He cherished moments spent at the beach with his wife, Arlene Brown, and his beloved grandchildren—Mike, Bethany, Delaney, Riley, and Phoebe—whose laughter brought him boundless joy. Additionally, he was a doting great-grandfather to Hayden, Kate, and Nora, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Kind and fun-loving, William had a personality that drew people in, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. He had a special love for animals, particularly cats, and will be profoundly missed by his furry companion, Rascal. His love for life extended beyond his family; he enjoyed sharing his passion for technology as a HAM operator, establishing connections with others through this engaging hobby. He enjoyed reading up on history and had many books.
William is survived by his wife, Arlene; his children, Sherrill Lavigne (Tim) and Sean Brown (Tanya); his siblings, David (Carol), Jackie White, and Patrick (Joanne); as well as his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He joins in eternal rest his parents, Walter and Olive Brown, and his siblings, Walter, Robert, and Richard, who await him in peace.
