Sydney White, a cherished lifetime educator and beloved friend, passed away on March 26, 2025, at the University of Vermont Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born on July 31, 1939, in White Plains, New York, Sydney dedicated her life to shaping young minds, primarily teaching 1st graders in Woodstock, Vermont. During the summers she was a camp counselor at Aloha Camp in Fairlee, she made a lot of friends especially, Laura and Jackson as well as many others. Her innovative teaching style and passion for education were reflected in her proudest accomplishment: her unique ability to help children learn to read. She also spent many summers at her family cottage on Lake Champlain in Milton.
Sydney was known for her spunky, fire-like attitude and her genuine care for her friends and family. She embodied qualities that made her a treasured companion—she was sharp, incredibly generous, and upfront with those she loved. Sydney was not only a resilient and tenacious fighter, but her kindness and hilarious nature made her a good friend to many especially at Quarry Hill, her home for the past decade.
In addition to her educational legacy, Sydney held a deep love for her grandchildren, embracing every moment spent with them. She enjoyed traveling and was an avid supporter of UConn women's basketball, often relishing the joy these activities brought to her life.
Sydney's family includes her fur girls, Mittens and Molly, who provided her with much companionship. She is survived by her lifelong friend, Betsy Wilson, adopted daughter Marlo Colbeth and her husband Rusty, as well as her adopted grandchildren: Kayleigh Charland and her husband Robert, Abigail Brewer and her husband Ryan, and Grace Colbeth and her fiancé Trent LaBounty. Additionally, she found delight in her great-grandchildren, Harper and Ella Charland. Sydney's good friend and caretaker, Amy Campbell and her husband Bruce, along with her nieces and nephews, also mourn her passing.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Judith and Wyndham R. White, Jr. and her brother, Wyndham R. White, III. In her retirement, she traveled extensively with her companion and partner Barbara Reed.
