St. Albans - Susan R. Farrar, 74, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, after an extended illness, with her family by her side.
Susan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 28, 1944, the daughter of Walter and Doris (Urlass) Rodham.
She attended schools in Boston and Duxbury, Massachusetts and graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1966. Susan served in the National Teacher Corps following graduation from college. She later received her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Vermont in 1985.
Susan was a social worker in Calhoun County, Alabama, South Boston, Massachusetts and St. Albans, Vermont before beginning a career with Howard Family Services in Burlington as a clinical social worker, including eleven years (1994-2005) as a Director of Children's Outpatient Services. She received many awards for her outstanding service. She retired in 2011 after 25 years at Howard.
Susan is survived by her husband, Bob Farrar, whom she married in Duxbury, Massachusetts on September 16, 1967. She is also survived by her two children, Caitlin Farrar of St. Albans and Samuel Farrar of Georgia, Vermont and her grandson Maxwell Robert Farrar. In addition, Susan is survived by her brother, Norman C. Rodham of Melbourne, Florida, her brother-in-law and his wife, Richard and Deborah Farrar of Mashpee, Massachusetts, several nieces and nephews and many close friends.
Throughout her life and career Susan helped many people and harmed none. She will be remembered for her contagious laughter, beautiful smile and love of books.
Susan was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. Memorial donations may be sent to the Friends at 29 Tabor Road, Swanton, Vermont 05488 or a charity of one's choice.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street in St. Albans. The time of visitation will conclude with a short memorial service. Susan's family is planning a service of celebration near the time of Susan's birthday in May 2019.
