Signe Mitchell, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, in South Hero, surrounded by her family. Born on July 30, 1938, in Sweden, Signe's journey through life was marked by creativity, generosity, and a deep love for her family. When she was 23 years old she left Sweden behind for an adventure in the United States and worked as an au pair, as a bank teller and then as a bookkeeper using her great affinity for numbers. She met the love of her life, Robert G. Mitchell, at an outdoor club in New Jersey and later married him on May 22, 1965. They were truly best friends until his death in 2007. After their first two children were born, they moved to Manchester, Vermont, to be closer to her parents-in-law and adopted their third child from South Korea.
Signe was a talented weaver who owned her own weaving studio and yarn shop in Manchester, Vermont, and had her work displayed at Southern Vermont Art Center and Frog Hollow Craft Association. She shared her artistry by weaving and knitting beautiful pieces that were cherished by her family.
Signe found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed nothing better than reading her many books she had collected over the years. Signe also cherished the camaraderie she experienced with her social clubs in the Islands, where she formed lasting friendships.
Her dedication to her community shone through as she volunteered for C.I.D.E.R. lunches, embodying the spirit of giving and kindness. During her time in Southern Vermont, Signe was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Manchester and a volunteer with hospice, where her faith and compassion profoundly impacted those around her.
Signe leaves behind her beloved children, Thomas Mitchell (and wife Marien), Deborah Unica (and husband Tony), and Dianna Mitchell. She was a devoted grandmother to Kirsten, Katelyn, Sonja, Jonah, Cesar and Hernando and great-grandmother to Kylie, Kiera and Levi.
As those who loved her remember Signe, they will hold dear the memories of her wit, her artistry, and the warmth of her spirit. She may have departed this world, but her love and light will continue to shine through. Her family finds solace in knowing that she will once again see her soulmate, her husband, Robert, and all of her nine siblings who predeceased her, and know she will be welcomed with open arms.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be a private family gathering and she will be buried next to her late husband, Robert, in Dellwood cemetery in Manchester, Vermont. Donations in her memory may be made to Champlain Islanders Developing Essential Resources (C.I.D.E.R.) at PO Box 13, South Hero, Vermont 05486, or online https://www.cidervt.org/how-you-can-help/donate.
