It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Arthur Kirby, aged 88, who left us on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Paul was a beloved husband, father, brother, son, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Born on July 1, 1936, to the late William and Isabel Kirby of Burlington, VT, Paul was the youngest of nine siblings, affectionately known as the “baby” of the family. Surrounded by loving older sisters and engaging in lively rivalries with his brothers, Paul grew up in modest conditions but was enriched by strong family values. Educated in the Burlington school system, Paul left Burlington High School early to join the US Air Force, where he served as a Military Police Officer from 1955 to 1959. Stationed mainly in Bermuda, he played a crucial role in guarding vital military aircraft.
After his service, Paul embarked on a career as a building contractor, dedicating over 35 years to the field. Known for his meticulous craftsmanship and high standards, he built homes with exceptional quality and expected the same from those he worked with. His commanding presence and commitment to excellence earned him the respect of the community.
Paul met Patricia Rose after leaving the military, and they were married on November 26, 1960. Together, they operated their own contracting business, with Patty managing the books and Paul leading the construction efforts. Their partnership spanned nearly 63 years, and together they raised three children and created a lifetime of memories.
Paul's passion for family was evident in the way he lived his life. The vacations he provided for his children, including local and long-distance camping trips in their family truck camper. Notable memories included trips to the West, visiting landmarks like Old Faithful, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands, as well as a memorable family camping journey to Florida. He also built a camp in North Wolcott, VT, where the family enjoyed exploring nature, and another in Eden, where he and Patty spent many weekends snowmobiling the VAST trails. Paul’s love of his children was magnified when he became a grandfather. His six grandsons meant the world to him, and he did everything in his power to ensure they were provided for and were taught important life skills. He made sure they knew he was always there for them, and he never faltered in this role. He was later blessed with three great grandsons and was delighted to watch them grow. He was tickled when they visited or when he received daily photos or videos of their antics.
In retirement, Paul and Patty traveled and took camping trips in their RV, exploring destinations like Aruba, the southern states, and Alaska. Paul also enjoyed woodworking, creating personalized furniture, toys, and crafts that hold special places in the hearts of his family and friends. His skilled craftsmanship included toy boxes, barns, rocking deer, birdhouses, and many other cherished items. His workshop was his sanctuary, where he spent hours building, fixing, and tinkering. Together with Pat, they raised two beautiful Golden Retrievers, Dee Dee and Katie, and a beloved cat named Pumpkin. Their love for their pets was evident, and these animals were cherished members of their family. An avid snowmobiler, Paul and Patty spent winters traversing Vermont's VAST trails. The sport was a family affair, and even after their children grew up, Paul and Patty continued to enjoy snowmobiling together. Their gravestone reflects their shared passion for the sport.
After Patty’s passing, Paul found comfort in his “adopted” cat Skye, who became his constant companion. Skye provided love and solace during the quiet times at home and remained faithfully by Paul’s side until his last day.
Paul's unwavering support for his family was felt by all. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer sound advice, and provide guidance. His stern but fair demeanor, combined with his generous heart, made him a respected and loved figure in the lives of those who knew him.
Paul is survived by his son, Jason Kirby; his daughters, Karen (Glenn) McNall and Debbie Picucci; his grandsons, Maxx (Avery), Mark (Sarah), Shayne (Jenny), Bryan (Kaitlin), Anthony, and Zachary; his great-grandsons, Finley, Hudson, and Nolan; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia Rose Kirby; his parents William and Isabel Kirby; his sisters Bertha, Catherine, Marie, Arlene, and Alice; and his brothers Donald, William, and Robert.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Sarah and Julie from the UVM Home Health Hospice team and the staff at McClure Miller Respite House. Your care and compassion were invaluable in guiding us through this emotional time. We also wish to express our gratitude to Paul’s lifelong friend Allen. Your unwavering support and kindness, especially after the loss of Pat, brought comfort and joy to Paul during his final years. Your visits were a source of happiness for him and for the entire family.
