Michael Carpenter

Michael Carpenter, 82, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025 at home after a period of declining health. He was born March 8, 1943 to George Richard Carpenter and Florence Fay Magoon in Barre, Vermont. He grew up in a loving home of eight children.

Some jobs he had throughout his life include working in the granite quarries in Barre, working in a bobbin factory, delivering carpets in San Francisco during a brief time of living in Santa Rosa California, and owning a taxi business in Barre. In later years he worked for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he had joined as a young man. He was a custodian and maintenance person for several of the Church's buildings in central and northern Vermont.

Michael was a mellow individual with a curious mind and a generous spirit. He took pleasure in offering assistance to those in need, whether through physical support or financial help. His easy-going sense of humor endeared him to many, making him a beloved figure among his friends and family. Michael enjoyed keeping up with current events and had a particular fondness for science and history programs. These interests enriched his life, often providing topics for discussion with those around him.

He married Marjorie Chapman Gilbert, his beloved wife, in the Washington D.C. temple of the Church in April 1977. She passed away in 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his stepdaughter Becci Davison, and siblings George Carpenter Jr., Barbara Pliscofsky, Laura Morin, and Cynthia Peake.

Michael is survived by his daughter Joanne (Carpenter) Thompson, stepchildren Linne Shea and her husband Chris, David Gilbert and his wife Merry Ann, two brothers, David and Norman, and his sister Roberta, nieces and nephews, many grandchildren and great grandchildren!

A funeral service will be held on April 19, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 22 Bushey Rd. St. Albans, VT 05478 beginning at 11am. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Michael's life and legacy.
