Maxine Sweeney

Maxine Sweeney, a beloved mother and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on January 20,2025, at the age of 87. Born on December 6, 1937, Maxine touched many lives with her warmth, kindness and vibrant spirit.

Maxine had a passion for crocheting, knitting, and cross stitch, skills that allowed her to create beautiful pieces. She relished car rides with her late husband, Elwin Sweeney I, sharing laughter and stories as they explored the open road particularly looking to stop into Fiddler Contests that they could sit in on, a definite favorite activity. A devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, Maxine carried her unwavering enthusiasm for the team throughout her life, fostering a love for the game in the those around her.

Her culinary talents were celebrated by many, as she loved to cook and bake, often preparing delicious meals that brought the family together. Her recipes will be treasured by her loved ones, serving as a reminder of the joyous times shared around the dining room table.

Maxine was also a dedicated lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, contributing her time and effort to support veterans and their families. Her commitment to this cause was a testament to her compassionate nature and her desire to give back to the community.

She is survived by her loving children, Linda Kirkpatrick (Glenn), Cheyanne Miller (Gene) Elwin Sweeney II, and Joan Murray (Rene). Her sister, Sandra Shepard (Bobby), her brother, Wayne Trayah (Lucy), and her sister Andrea Lammly (Christopher) who will carry her memory in their hearts. Maxine was a proud grandmother to 15 Grandchildren, 9 Great- Grandchildren, and 2 Great- Great- Grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death her beloved husband, Elwin Sweeney I, by her parents, Maurice and Irene Trayah, and her siblings, Marie Bushey, Earl “Butch” Trayah, and Pauline Bushey whose memories remain cherished by those who knew them.

Maxine will be remembered not only for her exceptional talents and interests but also for the deep love she held for her family and friends. Her legacy of kindness and joy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff who cared for our mom during her stay at Maple Lane Nursing Home.

A Celebration of Maxine’s life will take place on March 14th, 2025 at Minor Funeral Home in Milton from 5:00-7:00PM. With a mass to be held on March 15th, 2025 at St. Ann Church in Milton at 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.

Interment will be held at the Ethan Allen Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
