Malcolm Allen

South Hero -- Malcolm Allen, 95, passed away at home on July 28th, 2023. Malcolm was born in that same home on February 13th, 1928, in South Hero, VT, the son of Arthur and Aura Allen. 

Malcolm was a fixture in the town of South Hero. He ran Allen’s Garage for decades, towing cars and trucks, and even his own home, with the wrecker he built. He was proud of being a founding member of the Vermont Towing Association and his work to get the Move Over law passed in the state legislature. Upon his retirement, Allen’s Garage was the third oldest towing company in the nation. He enjoyed a mechanical challenge, building specialized equipment for local orchards and farms, and developing and modifying hydraulic systems for his tow trucks. Malcolm was also an avid bowler, winning league and singles championships all over New York and New England. Most of all, he loved being a part of the South Hero community, giving talks about its history through the local historical society and telling stories to anyone who visited him. 

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Allen and his grandchildren, Sean and Spencer Herrin who live near Baltimore, Maryland.

He is predeceased by his wife, Nancy Allen, his parents, Arthur and Aura Allen, and his brother, Elwin Allen.

A memorial gathering will be held at the Congregational Church of South Hero on South Street on Saturday, August 19 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
This will be a time to share stories, of which there are many, and enjoy each other’s company for as long or as little time as you would like. Malcolm’s cemetery commitment will be private as he wished.
