It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Joan Ann Mahoney, who passed away peacefully on May 31, 2023, at the McClure Miller Respite House after several months of declining health.
Joan was born on December 5, 1935, in Burlington, VT, the daughter of the late Ormand and Bertha (Vincent) Bushey. She was a graduate of Burlington High School and Champlain College. She married Robert John Mahoney in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski, VT on October 9, 1953. Together they raised their six children in Burlington.
Joan was the arts and crafts director in the Burlington school system for many years. She later went on to work for Digital and IBM in various leadership positions, eventually retiring from IBM to relocate to sunny Orlando, FL where she enjoyed her part time job at Walt Disney World. She loved her time in Florida and enjoyed telling stories about the many celebrities she met who visited the park. After spending a few years in Florida, we were all very excited to have Joan return to Vermont to be close to family.
Joan loved painting, playing Bingo, going to casinos, and doing puzzles. She was a very giving person who easily made friends wherever she went. She was a wonderful, talented baker and loved to bake different dishes for everyone, from family to strangers. She was always happiest when she was spending time with her family.
Joan is survived by five children and their spouses, David and Sherry Mahoney, Lauri Boudah, Kathy and David LaCross, Robert and Karen Mahoney, and William and Marilyn Mahoney, as well as her son-in-law David West. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew, Scott, Christine, Brett, Amber, Jason, Kasey, Cody, Kailee, Robert, Steven, Shanda, and Marissa, as well as 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Cindy Desso and Amber Bouvier, and her brothers Bill Bushey, Ormand Bushey Jr. and Richard Bushey, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Joan was predeceased by her daughter Karen West, granddaughter Wendy Nolley, son-in-law David Boudah, brothers Leroy Bushey and Jody Bushey, and sister Lois Booska.
The Family extends sincere gratitude to the providers and staff at the McClure Miller Respite House for the exceptional care, compassion and support provided to Joan in her final days. Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the McClure Miller Respite House, 3113 Roosevelt Hwy., Colchester, VT 05446.
We have been blessed and are very thankful for having Mom/Joan/Grammy in our lives. We will miss her dearly, but her memory will live on in our hearts.
In honoring Joan's wishes services will be private including burial in New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington.
