On October 25, 2024, Barbara Jane Grenley (Johnson) passed away peacefully surrounded by family and is onto her next journey at the age of 97.
Barbara was born on April 20, 1927, to John P Roberts and Gertrude Benjamin. Barbara grew up in Pittsfield Massachusetts and was an only child. After high school Barbara earned a full scholarship to dental hygiene school but turned it down due to family circumstances and started a career working at General Electric.
In her twenties she was a member of the Baptist church and enjoyed acting in a few plays where she met her future husband, Raymond Grenley. They were married on August 30, 1952. A year later they welcomed their first daughter Ruth. Two years later they had their son Stephen and then completed their family eight years later with Margaret.
Barbara courageously returned to school in her 50’s to attend UVM’s Nursing program. After Ray’s passing, she was determined to build her dream home in Fairfax with a view of “her mountains” and made that dream a reality in her 70’s. Barbara’s love for her cats was lifelong, owning many feline companions throughout her life. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and square dancing. She dabbled in golf and skiing in her free time. Barbara also enjoyed knitting and made her grandchildren many pairs of hats and mittens. She even created handmade braided rugs for her children.
Barbara leaves behind her three children, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
The family would like to give special thanks to Homestead Senior Living in St. Albans and Bayada Home and Health Care.
A private Committal service will take place at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery for her family on November 1, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Barbara’s name to the Franklin County Humane Society or Alcoholics Anonymous.
