Alice Eleanor Melaven

In loving memory: Alice E. Melaven of North Falmouth, MA (previously of Greenfield, MA) passed away on June 27, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. She was 102.

Alice was born on January 21, 1921, in Milton, VT, the daughter of the late Mark and Grace Kennedy Melaven. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her sister Mary Melaven Collins of Punta Gorda, FL and North Falmouth, MA, and seven nieces and nephews: Susan Collins Bergeron of North Falmouth, Carol Collins Cowen of North Falmouth, Mary Jean Collins of Bennington, VT, Barbara Collins of North Falmouth, Sally Collins Carroll of Twinsburg, OH, Ray Collins of Brookfield, CT, and Mark Collins of Provincetown, MA.

In addition, Alice leaves behind seventeen great nieces and nephews, twenty-two great-great nieces and nephews, and one great-great-great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her brother Emerson Melaven of Washington, DC, and her niece Patricia Collins Amaral of East Bridgewater, MA.

Alice served her country during World War II by enlisting in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). A graduate of Johnson State Teachers College in Vermont, she went on to earn her Master’s in Education at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Alice established her long teaching career at Four Corners Elementary School in Greenfield, MA, where she was devoted to, and beloved by, her second-grade students. A voracious reader with a wonderful sense of humor, Alice enjoyed lively discussions on current events, and always savored the lovely vistas of Megansett Harbor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 11 A.M. in the St. Ann Catholic Church (41 Main St, Milton, VT) with burial to follow in St. Ann's Cemetery.
