Alfred David St. Hilaire, better known as Fred, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who passed away on July 5, 2024, in St. Albans, Vermont. He was born on May 30, 1938, in Hinesburg, Vermont. Fred led a fulfilling life with various roles and accomplishments.
Fred graduated from Cathedral High School in 1956 and went on to serve in the United States Navy with honor and integrity. He was a proud veteran, embodying the values of loyalty and service to his country. He also attended St. Michael’s College for two years. During this time, Fred married Betty Jane Myers on December 27, 1958, of which they shared 63 beautiful years together. Betty predeceased him in April 2022.
His dedication to farming was a source of great pride, including his sheep farm in Georgia, Vermont. Fred also showcased his skills as a mechanic while owning and operating, St. Hilaire Mobil in Winooski during the 1970s. As a jack of all trades, his talents included working as a machinist, times study analyst, and contractor, among others. Fred's commitment to hard work and excellence was evident in all that he pursued. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning and preserving the harvest with his wife. He even made a variety of wines from plants grown on his property, and had a passion for woodworking, creating many intricate carvings throughout the years. Many will also remember Fred for his rich singing voice and sharing of songs learned during his upbringing.
In addition to his late wife, Fred was predeceased by his parents Alcide and Lorretta St. Hilaire of Williston, Vermont as well as his brothers and sisters. Fred is survived by his four children: David St. Hilaire and his wife Renee, Judith St. Hilaire and her husband PJ LaPorte, Joseph St. Hilaire and his wife Kim, and Denise Flinchum and her husband Brian. Grandchildren include: Danielle Lipford and her husband Chase, Rebecca Hall and her husband Jeremy, Amanda Hescock and her husband Heath, Travis St. Hilaire and his wife Stephanie, Rochelle LaPorte, Michael St. Hilaire, Kiersten Coffin and her husband Ricky, Colton Flinchum, Bryce Flinchum, and 11 great grandchildren, with an additional great grandchild expected.
A Mass in memory of Fred will be held at Ascension Church in Georgia on July 19th, 2024 beginning at 11AM, with the burial to follow in St. Francis of Xavier Cemetery in Winooski.
